iKhokha is a South African based fintech brand focused on providing SME’s in SA with access to digital payment acceptance and other relevant financial products.

iKhokha was founded by three Durban-based entrepreneurs that identified both a need and an opportunity to provide a cost-effective mobile-based card payment acceptance solution for South Africa’s approximately 1 000 000 SME’s.

The name iKhokha is derived from the isiZulu word Khokha which means they pay, he pays, she pays.

The iKhokha card machine and mobile app allow business owners to process card, cash and mobile payments through the app. The transaction fees charged are just 2.75% which makes iKhokha the most cost-effective solution in the market and considerably lower priced than the typical 3,5% that banks charge.

The iKhokha app and complimentary iKhokha.biz cloud-based reporting portal also provide business owners with real times analytics and powerful information on their sales enabling them to efficiently track and manage their cash flow.

This South African developed and manufactured solution has been through rigorous international testing with the international payments council and card schemes to ensure world class security and was the first African-developed mPOS device to achieve full international accreditation.

To date over 2500 merchants have signed up for the solution nationally, with the brand recently expanding their product offering to include a Cash Advance product that enables active merchants to access working capital through the iKhokha app. The advance is an unsecured factoring product that is paid off against future iKhokha card transaction revenue, with fixed upfront fees.

iKhokha’s goal is to drive digital financial inclusion for small businesses in emerging markets through mobile innovation and to become the go-to brand for SMEs in SA who need to accept digital payments.

iKhokha prides itself in superior, personalised customer service as well as intuitive and easy to use customer UX, delivering a wholistic experience that is changing the ways that South African SME’s “do business”.

Emerge Mobile the company behind the iKhokha brand has been funded by Capital Eye Investments since its inception in March 2012.

Game Stores

A partnership between home-grown fintech-preneurs and one of South Africa’s largest discount retailers, Game, is set to help small businesses by allowing them to transform their phone into a secure mobile Point of Sale (mPOS) terminal. They will be able to process debit and credit cards, cash and mobile payments with an iKhokha device.

iKhokha Cash Advance

iKhokha has recently launched the iKhokha cash advance product. Merchants are easily able to apply for a cash advance to fund business growth through their iKhokha app.

Applying for an iKhokha cash advance is simplified to three online mobile clicks. The merchant opens the iKhokha app, reviews his custom cash advance offer, selects how much he requires and selects the targeted repayment period and agrees to the transparent fixed fees. Once accepted, the money is deposited into his account within 24 hours.

The more a merchant processes through iKhokha the bigger the amount they qualify for. The Cash Advance offered to a business is calculated on card transaction history and is closely linked to average monthly card turnover to date.

Matt Putman, Managing Director @2PuttSA

Matt is the co-founder and managing director of Emerge Mobile, the company behind the iKhokha fintech brand. Matt is responsible for positioning iKhokha as a leader in the SME-focussed fintech space in SA. His responsibilities include developing the growth strategy, business development, company culture, fundraising and commercial structures of the business.

Prior to co-founding Emerge Mobile, Putman held senior positions across the marketing, digital communications and technology sectors in the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Ramsay Daly, Co-founder and Marketing Director @durbandreaming

Ramsay is responsible for driving both new channel and product development for iKhokha. This includes customer acquisition, retention and service architecture. As well as contributing to the marketing strategy and brand identity. In his spare time, he also tries hard to make people smile.

Prior to joining Emerge Mobile Daly held several positions in the online marketing and publishing sectors.

Clive Putman, Co-founder and CTO

Dr. Putman’s responsibilities encompass all that is required for the effective management of Emerge Mobile’s technology concerns. This includes technology strategy, engineering team management, system engineering, production and quality control, and devising and driving product roadmaps.

Dr. Putman has many years’ experience in a wide range of fields, notably communications security, the subject of his post-graduate work. Electing to take the entrepreneurial route early in his career, he founded and acted as managing director of two Durban-based technology companies in the fields of encryption and digital surveillance systems, namely Consultancy in Advanced Technology (Pty) Ltd and Cathexis Technologies (Pty) Ltd. He subsequently went on to hold senior roles in the acquiring organisations. His prodigious skill set and highly varied expertise played a decisive role in the formation of Emerge Mobile.
